El originario de Florida se movía entre grandes olas en Hawai cuando, al cruzar una de ellas, se desbalanceó y cayó.Las imágenes quedaron grabadas en un video. En él se ve cómo Andre Botha, dos veces campeón mundial de una variación del surf llamada bodyboard, rescata a Evan inconsciente. Tras pasar 3 olas debajo del agua, Botha sacó al surfista a la superficie y trató de reanimarlo en el mismo mar, mientras espera más asistencia.
